Photos of Bobcat
Seen in the Woods

Here is the brief story, if you came to this page without stopping by the main bobcat page:

This bobcat was encountered when I was out taking a walk in the woods. I was walking on a dirt road, going slowly and trying to be quiet. I looked up and caught a glimpse of this bobcat through the trees. I froze and very slowly got out the camera. I snapped off a few shots of the bobcat and it decided to walk away. I got a few more shots as it walked up the dirt road away from me. It paused before it walked into the brush and looked back at me for several moments. Then it disappeared. I went over afterward and backtracked it, finding some nice bobcat tracks in the mud.

This is the first view I had of the beautiful bobcat. I was 50 yards away, and behind some brush, but the animal was aware of me the entire time. It looked right at me. There is no hiding from this wary cat!

The bobcat apparently saw enough of me and decided to walk away. It did not run. I wasn't big and scary enough, I guess. It just calmly walked away, not really bothered by the human that was watching it in awe.

The bobcat walked up this old dirt road and paused near the brush at the top right before it departed from the road and disappeared from view. I imagine it was still watching me from the dense brush. These wild cats are masters of concealment and can easily lie in the brush and not be seen by us.

Notice the dark fur on the undersides of the feet of this bobcat. The short tail is tipped with white. The fur looks orangish-yellow from behind, but more gray from the side. The belly fur is white with dark spots.

Look at the back of the ears of this bobcat. The bobcat has a white spot on the back of each black ear. This is characteristic of this species. They also have longer tufts of fur at the tips of each ear.

Notice that the bobcat is walking on the hard-packed dirt part of the road, rather than the gravel. Bobcats, and many animals that travel these roads, take the easiest route. The hard-packed ground is easier on the feet.  In summer, it is also coated with dust, which makes for a very nice tracking surface. The gravel in the center, and at the sides of the road, is slippery and sharp.

I went over after the bobcat left and looked for tracks. I found a fresh scat at a point where the animal had exited the brush and entered a side road. It then walked through a wheel rut filled with this nice fine mud. This was the best track it left. All the details of a feline footprint are seen in this fine track.

The bobcat stood still, looking at me intently, while his tail twitched back and forth.
