Bobcat Scrapes

A bobcat scat that was found at the edge of a dirt road, with a scrape next to it. On some surfaces, the scrape will not be as clear as this. Bobcats often, but not always, leave a scrape next to their scat. Sometimes, they will make a scrape and urinate on it, or they may not deposit anything at all on it. Scrapes and scats function as territorial markers.

This scat with long scrape was deposited on a dirt trail. Bobcats often deposit scats at trail intersections. In this case, the bobcat made the deposit on a human trail, but a deer trail crossed it at this point. Animals don't differentiate between the users of the trails. It's just a travel route to them.

This bobcat scrape is approximately one month old. Cat scat is usually segmented and blunt on the ends. It is not always completely buried like that of domestic cats. This scrape was located in the middle of a seldom-used fire road. There had been rain and a little snow, but the track was still visible on the left side of the picture at the end of the scrape.
