A Pair of Salmon Spawning in the Eel River

Watch closely as the female salmon lays her eggs. The male hovers nearby, ready to fertilize them. You will see several instances when the water clouds up and gravel is spewed downstream. This is the female digging. She covers her eggs this way. If you look closely, you will see several eggs that came loose from their nest go floating past the camera. Some eggs never become fish. The current sweeps them away, or they are eaten by predators. The tiny fish are very vulnerable due to their size and become prey to many of the river's other inhabitants. The redd, or nest, is placed in a location where there is a lot of current, which aerates the eggs. When heavy rains come, the redds can be buried in sediment, which smothers the eggs. Life is difficult for the young salmon! They face many challenges before they can become full-sized fish.
