Several Salmon in the Eel River

The cloudy water is due to the activity of upstream salmon, who are digging. They dig by swimming on their sides and swishing their powerful tails back and forth to move the gravel and sediment on the river bottom. Salmon prepare their nests, or redds, first. Then they lay their eggs. The redd, as seen in this video clip, is sort of a depression dug into the riverbed. The lowest elevation is more out of the way of the strongest currents, which helps protect the eggs. It is not unusual for the current to catch the tiny eggs and sweep them away. Salmon face many challenges as they hatch, then grow into adult fish.
