Learn how to identify the tracks and signs
the American black bear makes as it travels through a forested environment. |
Tracking a black bear through the forest |
This black bear made quite a lot of sign as it traveled around in the forest. This area has some old roads that were constructed back in the old logging days, but are no longer used or maintained. The wildlife uses these old routes to move around easily in the thick vegetation found here. This bear made a lot of sign as it went from the creek, up a hillside and into the brush. It found a log and ripped it open so it could feast on grubs. Yummy! Then, the bear found two wasp nests, which it dug up so it could eat the larvae. The bear must have gotten stung by the angry wasps, because the next thing it did was roll down a steep incline and into a pond! Tracking and finding this story was fun! The bear came out of the pond and went on its way. It found a small sapling, which is straddle-marked. Then it wandered off into the tall grass. |
You can learn a lot just by following the bears and finding the tracks and signs they leave behind. You will learn their food habits and their daily routines. Bears find food in some amazing places. For such large animals, they do quite well out there in the woods! |
