| Black Bear Scavenges Salmon |
|
During the winter of 2012, the weather was very odd. Many days were warm and sunny when we normally should have had rain and cold temperatures. This mild weather had the black bears outside their winter dens and wandering around trying to find food. One good food source in this area is the carcasses of salmon that have spawned and died in the river. These wash up when we get high water flows. Sometimes, the salmon carcasses are buried in river debris, sand, or mud. In this video, you will see the signs left behind by a black bear who dug out two salmon carcasses from the sand and ate them. Watch and learn what tracks and signs to look for. |
