Pikeminnows Swimming
|
|
The pikeminnow is a non-native fish that was
accidentally introduced to the Eel River ecosystem. It does very
well in the Eel River due to warm water and slow flows in summer.
This non-native fish thus out-competes the native salmon and
steelhead on this river. Efforts are underway to remove the
pikeminnow from the river, however that task is extremely difficult.
In the past, public participation in fishing derbies was one method
used to remove this species from the Eel River. Other methods have
been tried, but how do you remove a species from an entire ecosystem
once it has taken hold? This is the dilemma facing wildlife managers
on this river. The native fish populations are declining and the
introduced species are very healthy.
Otters and mink do eat their share of pikeminnow. Anglers take some of them. Belted kingfishers, herons and egrets also consume pikeminnows. The native predators can't control the population alone though. |
