Mink Running Along Shore

I was hiking along the river when I saw a "V" in the water with a tiny dark object at the apex. I got closer and discovered that it was a mink swimming! This is a rare animal to see in my area, so I stuck around to watch. The mink exited the water onto some rock outcrops at the base of a cliff. It then ran over the rocks along the shore. It saw me and paused to watch. I think it was curious what that large creature was in the middle of the river!

Mink share the same habitat as otters. They are close in appearance, but mink have tails that are more bushy than those of otters. Mink are also smaller than otters. Some of their behaviors are similar though. They use areas along waterways as latrines, and deposit scat and scent as a way of communicating among others of their species.

This species hunts fish and invertebrates along the waterways. They can travel quite far each day in their search for prey. Mink and otters are competitors, so they tend to avoid each other. They will, however, visit each others scent stations.
