Redd Digging and Egg Laying

Watch Salmon Spawning in the Eel River

The water is cloudy as the video opens. Then the salmon swim into view. Watch closely as the female salmon slows down and touches the riverbed. She is carefully laying eggs. Several small male, "jack" salmon hang around the redd. This is one of nature's most amazing cycles. The salmon begin their life in freshwater rivers and streams. They live in freshwater for a few years, then migrate to the ocean. Part of their life cycle is spend in salt water. They then end their life cycle by migrating back to freshwater rivers and streams to spawn. After that, they die and their carcasses wash up on shore, where they are fed on by numerous species.
