This pond turtle was resting just underwater with its head held out of the water to breathe. This position also allows them to look for predators before they climb out of the water to bask. I swam quietly toward the turtle, filming as I went. When I got too close, the turtle dove and disappeared under a shelf of rock beneath the water. It hid from me easily there in the murky water. Notice how easily it swims with those webbed feet.
