Black Bear

Stomp Trails

Ursus americanus

Black bears walk in a sort of stomp to mark trails
near their mark trees and dens. This allows them
to leave scent that other bears can examine.

black bear stomp trail

This black bear stomp trail is very well-worn into the forest duff. It takes many trips through the duff to make such deep and well-worn paths. I walked back and forth twice next to this trail and my trail is barely visible to the right of the bear's trail. This trail led from a dirt road and down over the embankment. The slope on the other side was very steep, so I could not follow down it. I imagine there is either a bear bed or a mark tree at the other end of this well-used trail.

black bear trail down a slope

This trail was made by a black bear repeatedly clambering up and down this slope to get to the grasses it was feeding on at the time. The trail led into the forest and to another bear bed site.

close up of bear trail on slope

A close-up view showing the black bear's trail down the slope. Notice how the bear placed its feet in the same place each time it used this trail. That is what creates this well-worn appearance.

black bear trail in forest duff

The bear's trail in the forest duff is well-defined by repeated use. The depressions in the duff are made by the bear placing its feet carefully in the same spot each time.

bear trail near den site

Another well-defined bear trail in the forest duff. The forest floor here is covered with leaves of tan oak and various fallen branches. In some places, the bear's footsteps have worn the trail down to dirt. This indicates repeated usage of the trail over time.

well used bear trail

A regularly-used black bear through a mixed forest of Tan oak, coast redwood and Douglas fir. Notice the well-worn footsteps where the forest debris has been crushed or moved aside.
